Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my sewer line is broken or just blocked?

A blocked sewer line causes slow draining or backflow in multiple fixtures at once. A broken line shows additional signs — sewage smell in the yard, wet patches in the lawn, or subsidence near the house. The only way to confirm the cause and location is a CCTV inspection.

If the line is partially blocked you may have limited use, but you risk sewage backflow into the lowest fixtures in the house. If the line is fully blocked or collapsed, continued use will cause sewage to back up inside. Stop using the system and call us immediately.

Sydney Water is responsible for the public sewer main in the street. The private sewer drain from your house to the connection point at the boundary is the homeowner’s responsibility. AIM LOCAL handles all private drain work and can advise on the boundary point location.

Minor repairs and relining generally do not require approval. Full replacements involving the connection to the Sydney Water main require a Section 73 compliance certificate and Sydney Water notification. AIM LOCAL manages all required notifications and paperwork.

Quality pipe relining using CIPP (cured-in-place pipe) liners is rated to last 50 years. The resin liner is stronger than the original clay or PVC pipe and is resistant to root intrusion because there are no joints for roots to enter.

Only if the pipe has physically collapsed and relining is not viable. For cracks, root entry, and joint failures we use trenchless relining in most cases. We always confirm the approach after CCTV inspection before any excavation decision is made.

CCTV inspection takes 1–2 hours. Pipe relining for a standard residential run (15–25 metres) takes 4–8 hours in a single day. Excavation and replacement is typically 1–3 days depending on the length of the affected section.

Homes built before 1960 typically have vitrified clay pipes. Homes built 1960–1980 may have Orangeburg (tar paper) pipe which degrades badly and usually requires full replacement. Post-1980 homes are mostly PVC. Clay and Orangeburg pipes are prime candidates for relining or replacement.

Pipe relining is particularly valuable under slabs because it avoids the cost and disruption of concrete cutting. Provided the pipe is accessible from a cleanout point and the pipe shape is sufficiently intact, relining under a slab is a routine process.

Pipe relining carries a 25-year product warranty. All AIM LOCAL workmanship is warranted. We provide full documentation on completion including the post-repair CCTV video.
